What happens when you call

Calling or texting 988 connects you to a trained crisis counselor, not emergency dispatch — the call isn't automatically routed to police unless there's an immediate safety concern that requires it. The counselor's job is to listen, help you get through what you're facing right now, and figure out together what kind of support makes sense next. That might mean staying on the line until things feel more manageable, connecting you with local resources, or arranging further help if it's needed. You don't have to be actively suicidal to call — you can reach out for a crisis of any kind, or if you're worried about someone else. There's no wrong reason to call, and you won't be judged for reaching out.
