Why virtual works
The case for meeting online
Meeting online removes a lot of the friction that keeps people from starting therapy in the first place. There's no commute, no waiting room, no risk of running into someone you know. You can have a session from your living room, your car during a lunch break, or anywhere else you can get fifty private minutes — which for a lot of people is the difference between actually going and continuing to put it off.
It also means you're not limited to whoever happens to have an opening near you. I'm licensed across the whole state, so distance from a major city doesn't determine your options the way it used to.
The research backs this up: multiple recent studies comparing telehealth therapy to in-person care have found comparable outcomes for anxiety, depression, and trauma-related symptoms, with similar patient satisfaction and similar rates of people staying in treatment. The format isn't a compromise — for most people, it works about as well as sitting in the same room.
Before your first session
What you need
-
A device
A phone, tablet, or computer with a camera and microphone — whatever you already have on hand works fine.
-
An internet connection
Nothing special required. If a video call or a streaming show works fine for you normally, a session will too.
-
A private 50 minutes
A bedroom with the door closed, an empty office, or a parked car all work. Plenty of people do sessions from their car, and that's completely fine.
